The support for ISIS in the Arab world

Submitted by ISPI on Thu, 18/12/2014 - 11:53

According to a poll released by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies of Doha, the support for ISIS does not exceed 15% in seven of the eight Arab countries that were examined by this institute. The statistics show that there is no significant difference between these states in terms of support for this group. A negative opinion toward the so called Islamic State prevails in most of the Arab states. However, it is important to stress the exception of the Palestinian case, where almost one citizen out of four evaluates this movement in favorable terms, at least to a certain extent. When the results of all the countries examined by this study are taken together, 11% of the respondents hold a positive opinion on ISIS.

The majority of the population n the Arab states included in the research supports the coalition air-strike against ISIS. Nevertheless, the research shows that there is also a significant percentage of people who do not agree with the military intervention. The average support for this operation is 59% in the eight counties that were examined by the center. From the examined countries, Lebanon and Iraq show the highest support for the air-strikes and Saudi Arabia the lowest. The map also shows that there are significant differences in the percentage of support toward the anti-ISIS airstrikes between different countries.
