Cycle of meetings
The economic effects of the pandemic were also evident in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the first recession in over twenty years was recorded in 2020. While this setback interrupted a phase of expansion that had generated international confidence, estimates indicate a return to growth in 2021, albeit diversified by geographical area and sector. The modalities and timing will also be dictated by broader processes, from the regional integration efforts already underway on the continent to the promotion of digital innovation, from the development of infrastructures to the green transition and the blue economy - elements also present in the new EU-Africa partnership currently being drawn up.
This cycle of meetings organized in collaboration with Assolombarda aims to bring attention to countries and sectors that present specific opportunities for Italian companies, also in order to encourage industrial collaborations.
In recent years, Kenya has seen strong economic growth (an average of 5.6% between 2013 and 2019). If Nairobi is considered one of the main African hubs for investment and innovation, other countries in the East African Economic Community (EAC) have also distinguished themselves for their good pre-pandemic growth rates: Tanzania, which hosts the headquarters of the EAC, and Rwanda, in particular, have recorded growth of 6.8% and 9.4%, respectively, in 2019. Growth projections for the years ahead point to this area as one of the most resilient regions on the continent. What dynamics could drive this recovery and what are the obstacles?
