At a time when economic tremors in China are rippling through world markets and the country – already the second–biggest military spender in the world – is further increasing military spending at double–digit rates, it is essential to assess how far has President Xi gone in fulfilling the “China Dream”. One of his main slogans spells out a specific prophecy of China’s ascendance to cultural, economic and military power by 2049. China has recently reached a series of symbolic milestones (the yuan’s inclusion in the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights; the recognition as a market economy by a number of countries; the presidency of the G20 in 2016). However, domestic progress on political and economic reforms is lagging behind expectations. Will President Xi be able to fulfill its promise and take his country to prosperity? What opportunities and challenges for Italian companies?
This year’s conference drew from both ISPI’s Report China Dream: Still Coming True? and Focus Cina, a new project by ISPI joint with Italy–China Foundation on business opportunities in Chinese provinces.
The conference has been held in Milan on July 13 at Assolombarda Confindustria Milano Monza e Brianza (Via Pantano, 9).
