Expectations were high that this year’s NPT Review Conference and the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima would offer two opportunities to make steps forward on the path towards nuclear disarmament and non proliferation. Both events were a disappointment. On the other hand the recent agreement on the Iranian nuclear program was a major unprecedented breakthrough. Where is the international community heading and what are the priorities at this stage? What role could the United Nations, the nuclear and the non-nuclear weapons states play?
In collaboration with gLAWcal-Global Law Initiatives for Sustainable Development, the University Institute of European Studies (IUSE) in Turin and the University of Piemonte Orientale in Novara, in the framework of the European Union Research Executive Agency IRSES Project “Liberalism in Between Europe And China” (LIBEAC), Workpackages 2 and 4, coordinated by Aix-Marseille University (CEPERC), ISPI has organized a lecture by Prof. Daniel A. Bell, among the most important scholars on China’s political theory.
The discussion has been organized by ISPI, in cooperation with the European Foundation for Democracy, on how Muslim academics and activists can best de-construct the radical narrative that is increasingly proving so attractive to young Muslims across the Western world. The objective has been to explore the different US and EU experiences and best practices on the most effective ways to achieve this and consider if there is a need for new and/or different approaches to be considered.
