Some analysts think that the power of the Pasdaran is now greater than that of the Supreme Leader and that the Iranian economy is firmly in their hands, with RAND Corporation scholars note on the contrary that the IRGC is a strongly divided organization and not necessarily a conservative one. Where does the truth lie? Established as a military organization for the protection of the Islamic Republic, over the years the IRGC has become entangled with the country’s political and economic affairs.

The events of June 2007 marked the start of political fragmentation among Palestinian factions, revealing the image of a deeply divided and highly unstable political situation. On the one hand the legal  aspects of the crisis show the nature of political deadlock, harshly positioned between external pressure and tough internal bargaining, whereas on the other the political argument appears to be more intricate, with no practical solutions in the long term.

Thailandia: rosso perde, giallo vince

Thailand has been in a political turmoil since 2006 when the elected premier was overthrown by a military coup.

Thaksin became quite popular because of his economic policies in favour of the poorest and the rural groups (that are still the vast majority of the population). In addition he was able to deeply change the Thai politics substituting a big political party with something like a program for many small parties linked to individual figures or families.

Focus - Sicurezza energetica

EU President and High Representative: habemus papam

Habemus papam. In fact we have two, plus a lady cardinal. Much was said about Barroso’s appointment. Contrary to many comments, I believe that Van Rompuy has the right profile for the job and may well prove to be a good choice. I always found dishonest the British inspired campaign for a “high profile” candidate, one that “would stop the traffic in foreign capitals”. No European leader, least of all the British, has until now given any sign of being willing to play second fiddler to a European figure on the world stage.

The war in Iraq which started in 2003 has been the dominant military and political topic of recent years. Exploiting the security improvements achieved from 2007 onwards, in his election campaign Obama tried to overshadow this front by placing greater emphasis on Afghanistan. But Iraq has overwhelmingly returned to news fame with the recent terrorist attacks and the imminent general election.

I protocolli armeno-turchi e il nodo dell’Alto Karabakh

Unlike Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in Nagorno-Karabakh the conflict opposing Armenians and Azerbaijanis is still frozen since the ceasefire of 1994. In December 2007 the mediating efforts of the United States, France, and Russia (the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group) produced the so-called Madrid Principles, based on the return to Azerbaijan of most of the territories under Armenian control, security guarantees for the Nagorno-Karabakh and a referendum to determine the final status of the area.

Armenian-Turkish Protocols Will Be Ratified

In June 2008 President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan took the initiative and proposed President of Turkey Abdullah Gül to visit Yerevan. President Gül’s visit to Yerevan on 6 September 2008 was the first visit of a Turkish leader to Armenia. The formal pretext for the visit was attending the football match between the national teams for the World Cup qualifiers. Afterwards, the events have been unfolding fast.
