Madagascar: preventing a new election-related crisis

Madagascar rarely makes the headlines of international media, except perhaps recently due to a plague epidemic which was unfortunately not the first in the country. However, one year ahead of a delicate general election, the Big Island deserves full attention from the international community which should play its role in preventing a new crisis which could have a devastating impact on an already impoverished population.

Cybersecurity and the European digital market

National security is in the hand of Member States, not of the European Union, under Article 4, par. 2, TEU.  But cybersecurity is not only an issue involving national security, as it has much to do with trust with the digital economy, the freedom of speech, the free trade, the respect of citizens’ rights, their data protection and privacy; in a few words, it is a basic element of the European Single Market.

Deterring “bad hombres”: the EU cyber diplomatic toolbox

In June 2017, the Council of the European Union agreed to develop the cyber diplomatic toolbox, a joint EU diplomatic response to deter malicious cyber operations. The cyber diplomatic toolbox is a potential game changer for EU cybersecurity as it signals the potential consequences aggressors might face when they target EU member states’ information systems. However, there is more to that than meets the eyes.

Italy: Building a Cyber Resilient Society

Information communications technologies (ICTs) are the backbone of Europe's economy. They fuel new opportunities for citizens to connect, for governments to provide increased access to public services, for utilities to deliver critical services, and for businesses to serve as an engine of economic growth. The remarkable opportunities associated with being connected and participating in the Internet economy are enticing countries and corporations to further expand their digital footprint.

Armenia's Shift towards the Eurasian Economic Union: a Rejoinder of Realpolitik

Armenia’s decision (03.09.2013) to join the Russian sponsored Customs Union (CU) and its perspective evolution, the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), had the effect of a thunderclap in European politics. The decision left the European Union in disarray. In the framework of the Eastern Partnership programme (EaP), this year Brussels has been engaged in intense negotiations to foster closer relations with the former Soviet Republics of East Europe and the Caucasus.

Netherlands: Geert Wilders, the Dutch "Cricket"

In a country long known for its tradition of tolerance, the Dutch Party for Freedom (PVV) is an outlier. Vocally Islamophobic and unapologetically Euro-skeptic, the party has risen to global prominence by embodying the rise of Europe’s growing far-right fringe. At the forefront of the PVV is Geert Wilders – a Dutch parliamentarian infamous for his uncensored criticism of Islam.
