Since the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, the security environment around Moldova has weakened for various reasons, due to the refugee crisis and disruptions to businesses. Until now, it was believed that the situation around the breakaway region — Transnistria — was under Chisinau’s control. Perhaps, this might have led to a certain degree of complacency on the part of Moldovan authorities.
Moldova’s transition towards a functioning democracy seems to be a long shot.

The new electoral cycle in Moldova will begin in February 2019.
