Trade wars are becoming a reality. After a short period of apparent detente, US President Donald Trump recently declared that Washington is ready to levy tariffs on Chinese imports for $50bn, as well as broader investment restrictions. Now, trade talks have come to an impasse: the US Administration will also impose steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, as well on Mexico and Canada.
Trade between Italy and the USA has traditionally been significant and the two countries are close trade partners. The importance of the American market for Italian firms is today at its peak after many years. The US is the third foreign market for Italian exports, in 2017 accounting for 9% of the overall value of Italian goods sold abroad. In 2017, Italian exports of goods to the USA were worth over 40 billion euros, increasing remarkably in the past five years, while exports of services amounted to over 9 billion euros.

Il suo successore, Shavkat Mirziyoev, che pure era stato Primo Ministro per 13 anni, ha infatti impostato una strategia di ampio rinnovamento tanto nella sfera economica quanto in quella sociale.
Il mancato rinnovo della sospensione alle sanzioni contro Teheran non implica di per sé la loro reintroduzione automatica. Per ricreare il quadro sanzionatorio esistente prima dell’accordo sul nucleare con l’Iran (JCPOA) occorre adottare dei provvedimenti ad hoc che richiedono del tempo. Questa finestra di tempo - resa necessaria dalla stessa legislazione interna degli USA - potrebbe aprire un ulteriore spazio negoziale tra USA ed Europa per salvare l’accordo.

During his recent state visit to the Middle East, at the end of January, Vice President Mike Pence paid traditional lip service to Cairo’s strongman, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, confirming President Trump’s will to re-establish good political relations “after a time when our countries seemed to be drifting apart”[1].
