Matteo Pugliese

Associate Research Fellow Radicalizzazione e Terrorismo Internazionale

Matteo Pugliese is an ISPI Associate Research Fellow at the Centre on Radicalization and International Terrorism. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Barcelona in the Law and Political Science doctoral program, studying the role of prison intelligence in the prevention of terrorism and organized crime in Europe. His research interests include counter terrorism policy, jihadism, radicalization dynamics, prisons, intelligence, far-right extremism, NATO, hybrid threats and law enforcement.

He is also a Reserve Officer of Italian Carabinieri (gendarmerie - armed forces) on active duty at the Central Command. In 2017 and 2018 he was appointed by the OSCE Chairperson as a Special Representative on the Youth and Security agenda. Matteo is a regular contributor to the Italian newspaper Domani. His publications featured in the West Point Combating Terrorism Center’s journal Sentinel and the Italian domestic intelligence agency’s magazine Gnosis. In 2019, he was selected among the participants of the GLOBSEC Young Leaders Forum, as well as the Warsaw Security Forum’s New Security Leaders program, and the Atlantic Dialogues’ Emerging Leaders program.

Matteo holds a Law degree from the University of Genova and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies and International Security from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He also studied at the Catholic University of Santiago del Chile (PUC) and the University of Zagreb, Croatia. He graduated from the Italian Navy War College in the General Staff Officers’ Course. Matteo speaks English, Spanish and French, while has a minor knowledge of Russian and Serbo-Croatian.
