Senior Associate Research Fellow Russia, Caucaso e Asia Centrale

Pavel Baev

Dr. Pavel K. Baev is a Research Professor at the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO). He is also a Senior Non-Resident Fellow at the Brookings Institution (Washington DC) and a Senior Research Associate at the Institut Francias des Relations Internationales (IFRI, Paris).
He graduated from the Moscow State University (MA in Economic and Political Geography, 1979) and worked in a research institute in the USSR Ministry of Defence. After receiving his PhD in International Relations from the Institute of USA and Canada, Moscow in 1988, he worked in the newly-created Institute of Europe, Moscow until October 1992, when he joined PRIO. In 1995-2001 he was a co-editor of Security Dialogue, a quarterly policy-oriented journal produced at PRIO; in 1998-2004, he was a member of PRIO Board. He held NATO Democratic Institutions Fellowship for 1994-1996. 

His research on Russian policy in the Middle East is supported by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry and Defence Ministry. His other research interests include the transformation of the Russian military; the energy and security dimensions of the Russian-European relations; Russian policies in the Arctic; the development of Russia-China strategic partnership; and post-Soviet conflict management in the Caucasus and the greater Caspian area.

He is author of several books, among them The Russian Army in a Time of Troubles (London: SAGE, 1996) and Russian Energy Policy and Military power: Putin’s Quest for Greatness (London: Routledge, 2008).

His articles on the Russian military posture, Russian-European relations, Russia’s energy policy, peacekeeping and conflict management in Europe appeared in Armed Forces & Society, Cambridge Review of International Affairs, Contemporary Security Policy, European Security, International Peacekeeping, Jane’s Intelligence Review, The Journal of Peace Research, The Journal of Slavic Military Studies, Politique étrangerè, Problems of Post-Communism, Security Dialogue, Strategic Analysis, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, Terrorism and Political Violence, and The World Today. 

 

His weekly column appears in the Eurasia Daily Monitor produced by the Jamestown Foundation, Washington DC (http://www.jamestown.org/programs/edm).
