In the current Mediterranean crisis, the variables characterizing the events in Tirana are very peculiar. They do not relate to an autocratic regime in crisis, but to a fragile and imperfect democracy. The rebellion has remained limited in time and space. The scenarios that may arise from it total three: a continuing stalemate with government and opposition that persist in challenging one another; early elections; an escalation of violence that would destabilize not only the political framework but also the stability of the state institutions.
2010 saw an increase in tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang attacked a South Korean navy vessel in March, unveiled its uranium enrichment facility and shelled a coastal island in November. While a full-fledged war remains unlikely, US and South Korean retaliation has heightened tensions.
While China is unwilling to condemn Pyongyang a resumption, of the Six Party Talks is seen as the only possibility to contain North Korea. Pyongyang in the meantime uses the escalation of tensions as a bargaining chip to secure greater concessions.

Any observer of Turkish politics today would easily admit that the democratic glamour of the AKP’s first term in power is long over. The downward trend in question roughly began with the shelving of the EU accession reforms in 2005, continued with a number of controversial amendments regarding the authority of the security forces and freedom of expression, and culminated in the stillborn initiatives of 2009 to improve the status of Kurdish and Alevi citizens.
This paper exposes the modernization policies in Russia and how they clash with the Russian political pattern, which is inclined to shut itself up like an oyster.
The paper ends with Medvedev’s latest positions which are happily aligned with the Okinawa Charter statements, especially regarding some prospective new strategies for Russian political, economic and technological modernization, and Medvedev’s attempt to bring Russia towards a more-or-less defined e-Democracy, once more colliding with the classical political pattern.
The repercussions of the vote in South Sudan are doomed to extend well beyond Sudan, or the two Sudans after the likely secession of the Southern provinces. Despite the legality of the referendum, the African Union is aware of the historical moment that the whole Africa is about to face. The break-up of Sudan is likely to trigger off a snowball effect, threatening the integrity of other African states.
The year 2011 marks the twentieth anniversary of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In 1991 fifteen states emerged from the Union, each with its own specificities and each with challenging tasks ahead: to maintain public order, to rebuild identities, societies, laws and economic systems. In a nutshell, fifteen parallel processes of state and nation building started simultaneously, with a wide set of outputs.
