Balkan Route: For Migrants Covid-19 Is a Double Emergency

When in 2016 the European Union signed an agreement that gave some 6 billion euros to Turkey in order to stop the migrant flows from Syria, it was thought that the “migrant emergency” could be stopped. For a while the arrivals were fewer, a number not comparable with the 2015-2016 crisis. Today, due to different reasons such as the war in Syria and greater control of the “Mediterranean route”, the so-called “Balkan route” has gained new momentum.

Tackling Climate Change: Give Cities a Voice

The mayor of London oversees decisions regarding energy provision, transport, housing stock and waste management for the city’s nearly 9 million inhabitants, more than the total population of Denmark or Austria. This is true for many global cities, which make decisions about infrastructure provision that determine energy use and carbon emissions for populations larger than entire countries.

The Case of Lava Jato and Grand Corruption in Latin America

The generalization of grand corruption in Brazil is a recent phenomenon, the fruit of some institutional relaxation starting in the 1990s.

Does the EU-ACP Agreement Still Make Sense for Africa?

The EU-ACP Partnership Agreement, signed in Cotonou in 2000, is due to expire on 29 February 2020. Since the negotiations have ground to a halt, the parties have almost agreed to transitional measures to extend the application of the current agreement. Just before passing the torch to his successor, as the new European Commission took office December 1st, commissioner Neven Mimica briefed member states' representatives on the negotiations and its current standstill. Which appears to be very much inherent to the format itself.

Is Europe Equipped to Face a Global China?

The more you discuss with China, the better you will understand each other. The more you cooperate with China, the more incentives Beijing will have to pursue a liberal reform agenda. So went the underlying logic of “constructive engagement”, an unofficial approach taken by the EU vis-à-vis China for the most part of the last two decades.

Why Russia’s Special Economic Zones Fail to Attract Chinese Investors

During his state visit to Russia in June 2019, Chinese leader Xi Jinping together with president Vladimir Putin oversaw several signings of investment cooperation agreements between Chinese and Russian companies[1]. These documents promised over a billion dollars worth of Chinese foreign direct investments (FDI) in Russia in the years to come.

Honduras: A State in Turmoil

Honduras has in recent years stood out for its relative success in making inroads against organised crime and in curbing its sky-high homicide rates. But beneath the veneer of its achievements lie dysfunctional politics, high levels of ongoing violence and deep public discontent — all of which have worked together to spur recurrent waves of social unrest and prompt hundreds of thousands of Hondurans to flee northward in search of a better life.
