Jonathan Woetzel

Based in China since 1985, Dr. Jonathan Woetzel has been instrumental in building McKinsey & Company's China office. In addition to his work helping Chinese and other Asian businesses prepare for global growth, Jonathan is a director of the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), McKinsey's business and economics research arm. He also leads McKinsey's Cities Special Initiative and is responsible for convening McKinsey's work with city, regional, and national authorities in more than 40 geographies around the world.

Catherine WIHTOL de WENDEN is Director of research at CNRS (CERI). For 30 years she has been a researcher on international migration, from a Political Science and Public Law approach. She studied in Sciences-Po Paris and University Paris I (Panthéon- Sorbonne) She got her Ph D in Political Science in 1986. She has published 20 books, alone or as co-writer and around 150 articles.

Arturo Varvelli

Arturo Varvelli is the Head of the Rome Office and Senior Policy Fellow for the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), and a Senior Associate Fellow at ISPI. He also works as a scholar on topics such as Italian-Libyan relations, Libyan domestic and foreign politics, Italian foreign policy in the Middle East and Mediterranean region, Jihadist groups in North Africa, having published both books and articles on these subjects.

Piera Tortora

Piera Tortora is the Coordinator of OECD’s Sustainable Ocean for All Initiative, aimed at supporting a transition to a global sustainable ocean economy that also the poorest and most vulnerable countries can benefit from. Piera has worked at the OECD since 2011 where, prior to leading the Sustainable Ocean for All Initiative, she led on Financing for Sustainable Development work on Small Island Developing States, Multilateral Development Finance and Transition Finance.

Valeria Talbot

Valeria Talbot is a Senior Research Fellow and Head of ISPI's Middle East and North Africa Centre, in charge of Middle East Studies. She also is a lecturer at the Master in Middle Eastern Studies in ASERI – Catholic University, and at the IULM University of Milan. She was ISPI scientific coordinator of Arab Trans, a FP7 funded research project on political and social transformations in the Arab World after the Arab uprisings in 2010-2011.

Stefano Stefanini

Ambassador Stefano Stefanini is a Senior Advisor at ISPI. Prior to this he worked as Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano between 2007 and 2010 where he provided analysis on international affairs, Transatlantic affairs, and security and defence capabilities; he also worked as a Permanent Representative of Italy at NATO; Deputy Chief of Mission of the Italian Embassy in Washington, DC. Finally, from 2013 to 2014 he served as Vice Chairman of OTO Melara, Finmeccanica.

Vittorio Sandalli

Vittorio Sandalli, a Law graduate, first joined the Italian civil service in 1977. He served in numerous capacities in the Ministry of Defence in Rome before entering the diplomatic service in 1990. Between 2007 and 2011, he served as the Italian Ambassador to Georgia. From 2015 to 2020, he was the Italian Ambassador to Indonesia. On the 29th of June, 2020, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy to Afghanistan.

Peter Y. A. Ryan

Peter Ryan is full Professor of Applied Security at the University of Luxembourg since Feb 2009. Since joining the University of Luxembourg he has grown the APSIA (Applied Security and Information Assurance) group that is now more than 25 strong. He has around 25 years of experience in cryptography, information assurance and formal verification. He pioneered the application of process calculi to modelling and analysis of secure systems, in particular presenting the first process algebraic characterization of non-interference taking account of non-determinism (CSFW 1990).

Andrea Renda

Andrea Renda is a senior research fellow and head of Global Governance, Regulation, Innovation and the Digital Economy (GRID) at CEPS. He is currently a non-resident senior fellow at Duke University’s Kenan Institute for Ethics. From September 2017, he holds the “Google Chair” for Digital Innovation at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium), where he is also responsible for the course “Regulatory Impact Assessment for Business” since 2007.

Lia Quartapelle

Lia Quartapelle is a Research Fellow of the Africa Programme at ISPI. She lectures the module of Policies for Development Cooperation at the University of Pavia. She is an economist by training and she holds degrees from the Universities of Pavia and Florence. She got a Master of Science in Economics with reference to Africa at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and a PhD in Development Economics at the University of Pavia with a dissertation on aid and employment in Ghana and Mozambique.
