Globalization and the shift of economic power towards emerging countries – especially China – has produced some negative effects in developed countries: growing income inequalities and the ensuing rise of nationalist and populist movements.
In this context, how to preserve liberal values and practices, while understanding the root–causes of populism? How to enhance EU–Asia relations? And, particularly, how to further strengthen EU–Japan cooperation?

ISPI presented its annual flagship report The Age of Uncertainty. Global Scenarios and Italy on the occasion of the conference "European Integration in the Age of Populism, Disintegration and Migration”. The event has been organized in Berlin with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik (DGAP) and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES).
The Belt–and–Road initiative (BRI) proposed by Xi Jinping in 2013 is a commitment to build networks of connectivity along the existing and planned international routes from various regions of China across Central and South Asia to Europe as a terminal point. The BRI is not just a way of reviving ancient trade links between Asia and Europe, but an ambitious programme with massive economic and geo–political impact on various regions in Asia, Europe and also Africa. What are the global economic and geo–political implications of the BRI?
Medium and long–term trends seem to converge at an unprecedented pace: from weak economic growth to demographic decline in mature economies; from growing inequalities to the rise of populism and nationalism, to the changing nature of conflicts. All this will make global governance and cooperation harder, fundamentally altering the global landscape. How, and to what extent, will rising powers challenge the international liberal order? Which is the possible impact within states in terms of tensions between governments and societies?

Terrorism is constantly evolving. Over the last years, local radicalization phenomena and the flow of fighters moving between Europe and the Middle East have had a major impact on the European security. Such a situation seems to prove the need for a broader strategy to counter radicalization, which takes into account the extent and the diversity of the causes behind the spread of the jihadist threat.
