How the Twenty-Year Afghanistan War Paved the Way for New Insurrectional Terrorism

The twenty-year war in Afghanistan (2001 to 2021) has come to an end. This latest conflict was shaped by two fronts: a more explicit one, pitting a long-lasting Taliban insurgency against foreign armies and a national government, which the fundamentalist movement deemed illegitimate; and another, less manifest one, embodied in the struggle to counter jihadist terrorism which has taken root in the country and which is pursued by different groups and acronyms.

Still a Mediator: Qatar’s Afghan Shot on the International Stage

Qatar is carving out a leading role for itself within international diplomacy - particularly in light of recent events in Afghanistan - through its mediation-oriented foreign policy. This occurs after — and despite — three years of political and diplomatic crisis between the Quartet (Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates-UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt) and Qatar. Doha’ diplomacy appears better positioned — and influential — today than before the eruption of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) rift, occurred in 2017.

The Promise of the Biden Administration’s Anti-Corruption Drive

The presidency of Donald Trump terrified anti-corruption practitioners in both the US and abroad. Because of its role in enforcing anti-corruption legislation with extraterritorial reach, supporting civil society initiatives that fostered anti-corruption, and creating international legal instruments against corruption, the US was rightfully seen as one of the main promotors of anti-corruption measures.
