Thailand has been in a political turmoil since 2006 when the elected premier was overthrown by a military coup.
Thaksin became quite popular because of his economic policies in favour of the poorest and the rural groups (that are still the vast majority of the population). In addition he was able to deeply change the Thai politics substituting a big political party with something like a program for many small parties linked to individual figures or families.
After its victory in the short war with Georgia in August 2008, its strengthening of control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and the official abolition of the anti-terror operation in Chechnya on 16 April 2009, Russia’s positions throughout the Caucasus seemed increasingly strong. But the current economic stagnation and diffusion of violence in other North Caucasus republics (mainly Dagestan and Ingushetia) show that the Russian attitude in the region does need major changes.
Vergil has experienced an unexpected revival lately. Indeed, his famous «beware of Greeks bearing gifts» [Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes] has been quoted or paraphrased frequently in the international media coverage of the Greek sovereign debt crisis – mostly to underline how poisoned, alas, the gift was. One of the recurrent themes in U.S. strategic thinking is the evolution of forms of war and the type of planning that must follow for U.S. security policy. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev finally unveiled a muchvaunted draft European security treaty which he said will help the world «finally get rid of the legacy of the Cold War». Besides affirming the principle of non-divisibility of security, committing signatory countries to Nato like security pledges in case of an attack on one of its members, the draft is still obscure as decision-making processes, relations with other existing organizations, threats and menaces’ nature.

The war in Iraq which started in 2003 has been the dominant military and political topic of recent years. Exploiting the security improvements achieved from 2007 onwards, in his election campaign Obama tried to overshadow this front by placing greater emphasis on Afghanistan. But Iraq has overwhelmingly returned to news fame with the recent terrorist attacks and the imminent general election.
In June 2008 President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan took the initiative and proposed President of Turkey Abdullah Gül to visit Yerevan.
