2021 kicked off with some old and new challenges for Moscow: the economic and health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new administration in the US, sanctions and volatile oil prices, and political crises in Russia’s neighbourhood, where we are witnessing an escalating stand-off over Ukraine. At the same time, international concern over the health of the jailed Russian opponent Alexei Navalny is growing, while President Vladimir Putin has signed into law the results of last year’s constitutional referendum allowing him to potentially hold on to power until 2036.
President Mario Draghi has chosen Libya as destination for his first official visit abroad. On 6th April, Draghi has met Prime Minister Dabaiba, who is currently leading the Government of National Unity, which has been formed in the first days of March 2021 after years of civil wars. The priority accorded to Libya is nothing but a case: it is an important signal from Italy, directed to Libya, but also to the other regional actors, to Europe and to the international community in general, as well as to our companies interested in the country.

Yemen’s latest escalation is deteriorating the situation on the ground and putting a strain on the “renewed international momentum” recently announced by the UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths. Over the last weeks, the Houthis launched an offensive to seize the strategic town of Marib, while, on the external front, several Saudi oil and military facilities were targeted. Besides Riyadh’s prompt response, the current escalation risks undermine Biden’s diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in the country.
Maritime transport underpins global supply chain linkages and economic interdependency with shipping and ports estimated to handle over 80 per cent of global merchandise trade by volume and more than 70 per cent by value. As a result, when the pandemic outbroke, the sector has worked as a transmission channel sending shockwaves across supply chains and regions. Indeed, disrupted transport networks and supply chains have significantly undermined world trade and economic activity, which contracted respectively by 9% and 4,9%.
