Valeria Talbot is a Senior Research Fellow and Co-Head of ISPI's Middle East and North Africa Centre, in charge of Middle East Studies. She also is a lecturer at the Master in Middle Eastern Studies in ASERI – Catholic University, and at the IULM University of Milan. She was ISPI scientific coordinator of Arab Trans, a FP7 funded research project on political and social transformations in the Arab World after the Arab uprisings in 2010-2011.

Claudio Bertolotti (PhD) is Director and Head of Research at Swiss-Italian company START InSight. His academic and professional research focus on terrorism, radicalisation, Intellicence, security in Mediterranean area, conterinsurgency, small wars and asymmetric conflicts in the MENA area (in particular Afghanistan Syria and Libya). Since 2015, he is Senior Researcher at the Centre Euromaghrébin de Recherches et d’Etudes Stratégiques (CEMRES) in Tunis and Italian Representative within the ‘5+5 Defense Initiative’ international research working group.
Eleonora Ardemagni is an ISPI Associate Research Fellow. Her research analysis focuses on political and security issues in Yemen and the Gulf monarchies, and on Arab military forces.

There is no shortage in economic literature on the importance of economic diversification for healthy, resilient, and sustainable growth, and numerous real case studies support such recommendation. Put simply, a country that puts ‘its eggs in one basket’ is at the mercy of exogenous factors that go beyond any government control, thereby undermining ‘prospects for longer-term economic growth’, as put by the World Bank[1].
We are approaching an energy inflection point in the global economy: plentiful oil supply, a demand plateau by 2030, and more competitive renewable-energy options, even as investors and consumers grow leerier of carbon-intensive products. Oil producers’ future in the Gulf is still one in which oil revenues fail to meet growth goals of governments, with a knock-on effect on job expectations for citizens.
