Il 2022 è stato un anno di cambiamenti drastici per i sistemi alimentari europei ed internazionali. A febbraio, l’invasione dell’Ucraina da parte della Russia – con il conseguente blocco navale posto alle esportazioni ucraine e duro regime di sanzioni europee contro le manifatture russe e bielorusse – ha provocato un brusco risveglio per quegli europei che consideravano la possibilità di una carestia su larga scala un retaggio novecentesco.

In February, Russia's invasion of Ukraine – with the resulting Black Sea blockade imposed on Ukrainian exports and harsh European sanctions against Russian and Belarusian manufacturers – was a rude awakening for those Europeans who saw large-scale famine as a legacy of the 20th century.

L'ascesa del Sud del Mondo non è più un prodotto dell'immaginazione o una mera aspirazione. Sta diventando realtà. L'integrazione del Sud nell'economia globale ha generato molte opportunità, considerando che la sua quota di produzione di semilavorati è passata dal 40% nel 2002 al 53% nel 2021. Anche se non si dovesse considerare la Cina, l'ascesa del resto del Sud mostra comunque la stessa tendenza di crescita. Una maggiore integrazione globale, tuttavia, implica anche maggiore vulnerabilità.

La Primavera araba, partita dalla Tunisia nel 2011 per coinvolgere poi la Libia, l'Egitto, la Siria e lo Yemen, è rimasta inattiva per quasi un decennio, fino al 2019, anno in cui ha scosso altri quattro Paesi che nel 2011 erano restati in disparte: Algeria, Sudan, Libano e Irak. Questa seconda ondata, caratterizzata più o meno dalle stesse modalità di azione collettiva, ha dimostrato che lo spirito della rivolta è ancora assolutamente vivo e che la Primavera araba non è morta. Si tratta di un processo non ancora concluso.

The Arab Spring, which started in Tunisia in 2011, reaching Libya, Egypt, Syria, and Yemen, lay dormant for over a decade until 2019, when it shook four other countries which stood on the sidelines in 2011: Algeria, Sudan, Lebanon, and Iraq. This second wave, with more or less the same collective action repertories, showed that the spirit of revolt was still very much alive and that the Arab Spring is not dead. It is a ongoing process.

The rise of the global South is no longer a matter of imagination and aspiration alone. It is emerging as a reality. Its integration into the global economy has generated many opportunities, as the share of the South in intermediate products increased from 40% in 2002 to 53% in 2021. Even if China is removed from the South, the rise of the rest of the South follows the same trend. Greater global integration, however, also means greater vulnerability.

2022 was a year of war and inflation. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine was largely unforeseen. A rebound of pent-up demand from the pandemic, supply bottlenecks, and skyrocketing energy prices spiralled inflation to around 10% in advanced countries, an inconceivable level since inflation-targeting monetary regimes were introduced in the early 1990s.
In 2023 we might see positive economic surprises in Europe (absent an escalation of the war): better-than-expected growth and lower-than-expected inflation.
