The europe to come

We all wish that “Europe 2012” will be different from the one we have experienced in 2011.

Exactly 20 years after the signature of the Maastricht Treaty, foundations have been laid for a more solid and durable “fiscal compact” going beyond the current members of the euro zone – a move that is expected to fill the well-known gap left by Maastricht’s “unfinished business”.

Politics, Economics and Foreign Policies Post-Earthquake Japan-Doing OK but Must do Better

Japan is facing hard times. Domestic politics is stuck in a stalemate and is as ever replacing Prime Minister every 12-18 months. Economic growth remains sluggish, the country is burdened with public debt amounting to 200% of the country’s GDP while at the same being confronted with a possibly nuclear-armed North Korea and a militarily growing assertive China. ISPI Studies has invited five authors European, Japanese and American authors to make sense of the current state and trends of Japanese politics, economics and foreign policies.

Europe Abroad: Carving Out a New Place in the International Arena

Two years after the appointment of Catherine Ashton to the post of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and one year after the introduction of the European External Action Service (EEAS), an analysis of the (limited) results so far achieved is required.

‘ISPI Studies’ cover this issue by highlighting the drawbacks of the new EU diplomatic corps in terms of efficiency of the internal decision-making process and external representation.

Polish nationalism in transformation

Nationalism can be defined as a discursive legitimisation of political action through commitment to national interests or ideas based on the mega-narratives of national identity. Poland belongs to states with particularly strong narratives of national identity around which Polish nationalism emerges. The referential narrative framework of Polish national identity has traditionally included three mega-narratives.

Framing the Eurobond

German opposition to the Eurobond proposal is intense. Whether you poll public opinion or survey edi-torials in the popular newspapers, the answer is always the same. The German people do not want to be responsible for the debts of the Greeks, Irish, Portuguese, Spanish, or the Italians. They do not want to run the risk that they could have to pay back the loans taken out by countries that appear to have borrowed irresponsibly. And they do not believe their parliamentarians should be allowed to make a decision that would be too painful to reverse.

The Euro-crisis and economic growth

Beyond the immediate crises, centring on the inability of countries such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal to finance their public debt without EU/IMF support, at the heart of the Euro crisis lies the increasing divergence in economic performance between the core and the periphery, aggravated by current austerity programmes, especially in those countries with long-standing structural reform deficits. For example, the Commission’s Spring Forecast shows that the worst growth performance forecast in 2011 and 2012 is for Greece and Portugal(1).

Iran at the Crossroad. The role of the Clergy
Why the title: Iran at the Crossroad? Because the Iranian establishment has to decide between the current form of government and a more democratic one. How can we define the current form of government? A theocracy? No, we can’t. Because it is not upon the word of God – in this case the Koran and the Shia tradition – that rules are made.
